Industry-standard networking for the new Acorn A4 portable
Acorn developer and dealer Atomwide is pleased to announce Ethernet for
A4, a solution which allows Acorn A4 users to attach their portable
computers to industry-standard Ethernet networks and communicate with
Acorn and other computers.
The pocket-sized adapter attaches to the parallel port on the back of
the A4 and can be connected to thin Ethernet cabling (10Base-2). It is
supplied with software which allows it to communicate with both TCP/IP
and AUN networks - the industry standard for Unix computers and Acorn's
own advanced and improved networking system respectively. Ethernet is
a networking standard which offers improved data transfer rates
compared to Acorn's Econet. All Atomwide Ethernet hardware complies
with the IEEE 802.3 standard, so users are assured of full Ethernet
compatibility.
Users can run a choice of software, as with all Atomwide Ethernet
cards. Those with a Unix (NFS) file server on their network can run
Acorn's TCP/IP Protocol Suite software. Networks with an Acorn Level 4
fileserver can use Acorn Universal Networking (AUN), which is as easy
to use as Econet but much faster.
Atomwide is now able to supply IEEE 802.3-compliant Ethernet cards for
all Acorn RISC computers. Two further models of internal expansion
cards are available, one for the A3000 and and one for larger A400 and
A5000 models; hundreds are already in use in schools, colleges and
businesses throughout the UK and Europe.
"Ethernet and AUN are the way forward for networking with Acorn
computers. By supporting Acorn's own software and the industry
standards we can guarantee our customers complete compatibility with
Acorn's networking strategy which we fully support," said Martin
Coulson, managing director of Atomwide.
Ethernet for A4 is available in October priced at #199 per adapter.
Education and quantity discounts apply.
